Natural Environment Teaching (NET) is a scientifically based teaching method that allows practitioners to incorporate the learner’s environment into the teaching and facilitates the generalization of skills. These skills can be generalized to multiple settings including school, home, community, etc., to ensure the individual can demonstrate mastery of the newly acquired skill. During NET sessions, JBC utilize toys and fun interactive activities as motivation and learning opportunities to teach new skills. NET sessions often look like the individual just having fun and playing games. However, there is always a ton of learning that takes place throughout the fun sessions. The skills acquired are always individualized but some skills taught can be: effective communication skills, identifying objects and people, sharing/turn taking, learning to be a humble winner and gracefully accepting losing, self-help skills, safety skills, and social skills, just to name a few.
